Having spent many years apart from family, sending birthday gifts is always an important event. When I ask them what they want, the answer is always “nothing” or “anything”. It is difficult to choose a gift that one likes. I observe the subtle nuances of their daily lives that I could easily miss, and how they engage with their surroundings. I am most pleased when they receive my gift and say, "This is what I needed the most!” For me, the design process is about careful observation and choice, just like choosing a gift. A good design is a collection of time, concentration, memory, effort, and feelings for the other person.
